Prof Gerrard Gill

Professor Gerard Gill joined Cooloola Coast General Practice in July 2023 initially for a 2 week stay but loves our little piece of paradise and continues to return on a regular basis.   
 
Professor Gill graduated in medicine from the University of Tasmania in 1975 and after internship at the Royal Hobart Hospital, and further hospital experience at Geelong Hospital and in the Rotating Residency Program in Melbourne, entered general practice in the northern suburbs of Launceston in 1980. He remained in this same practice until he accepted his Deakin appointment in 2011.
 
Professor Gill regards himself as a true generalist, bag carrying GP. His research activities focus on the care of disadvantaged populations and the elderly, medical workforce planning, the development of young GP researchers and immunisation.

Dr Dhushy Rajesparasingam

MBBS

Dr Raj, as he is affectionately known, trained in Sri Lanka (1990) before relocating to New Zealand and then Australia. Having practiced for 20 years in Victoria, Dr Raj joined our Practice in 2018.

With an interest in all aspects of family medicine, the Cooloola Coast community keeps him busy.

Dr Raj’s two daughters have followed him into medicine, one being a children’s psychologist and one going for a post graduate degree in nursing. In his free time, he enjoys reading and travel.

Dr Mel Cabatuando

Our Senior Doctor, Dr Mel is a passionate GP who is well established in the Cooloola Coast region having been with the Practice for well over a decade. Gaining her qualifications in the Philipines in 1983, she became a Fellow of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2011. Dr Mel has also trained in Dermoscopy and Skin Cancer Management.

Other areas of interest are Aboriginal Health, Paediatric Health, Mental Health and General Medicine.
In her free time Dr Mel is involved in community outreach and tending to her beloved garden.

Dr Don Hogan

MBBCh, FRACGP

Beginning his medical career in South Africa in 1972, Dr Don spent 5 years in hospital practice before moving to the field of psychiatry. No stranger to remote areas, he has practiced medicine in some of the most isolated places in the world, including Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha.
Dr Don then spent 8 years in northwest Tasmania followed by another 4 in the Northern Territory.

Health issues necessitated retirement a few years ago, but he has recently returned to limited practice and enjoys the blend of work stimulation and sailing, fishing and golf.

Dr Emma-Jane Rees

Dr Emma Rees is a Specialist General Practitioner with additional qualifications in women’s health. She is also a clinical lecturer and author of published research. She has worked in medicine in the UK and Australia for over twenty years.

Dr Emma’s experience and specialist qualifications span general practice, women’s health, occupational health, and medical teaching. She has a strong background in clinical research and is particularly passionate about shared decision-making, a concept she actively promotes in her practice to ensure patients are actively involved in their healthcare journey.

Dr. Emma’s vision is to create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, can access high-quality healthcare and feel empowered by genuine community support to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Her unwavering commitment to this vision is a source of inspiration for her patients and colleagues alike.

Dr Emma is a private billing doctor who works from multiple locations for the convenience of her patients. She is available at Rainbow Beach on Mondays and Fridays, Cooloola Cove on Tuesdays, and Tin Can Bay on Wednesdays and Thursdays. This diverse schedule allows her to reach a wider patient base and provide her services to more people.

Dr Emma is registered to perform Coal Board and Rail Medicals.

Dr Shathurthica Joganathan ( Jo)

MBBS-qualified doctor with 10 years of combined overseas and Australian healthcare experience, with a strong background in acute care, emergency medicine, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Passionate about delivering comprehensive patient care with a commitment to evidence-based practice.

Long-term professional goals include contributing to improved access to high-quality primary and urgent care services, with a focus on strengthening preventive health strategies, chronic disease management, and advancing women’s health outcomes within the community. Also aims to further develop expertise in skin health and minor procedural medicine, including dermatological assessments and in-clinic procedures.

Outside of medicine, enjoys travelling around the country with her husband and relaxing at home watching movies together.

Dr-Subha

Dr Subha

Dr Subha is a dedicated General Practitioner with a broad background in hospital medicine, emergency medicine, and rural healthcare. She graduated from medical school in Sri Lanka in 2014 and has been practising medicine continuously since then, gaining extensive experience across a wide range of medical specialties and healthcare systems.

Following graduation, Dr Subha completed rotations in General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology before commencing work as a Senior Medical Officer in a rural hospital in Sri Lanka. During this time, she developed strong expertise in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and infectious diseases. She also gained valuable experience in preventive healthcare and the long-term management of complex medical conditions.

Dr Subha later pursued a career in Emergency Medicine, working for over four years in busy emergency departments in Sri Lanka, where she cared for patients with a wide variety of acute medical and surgical emergencies. She further expanded her experience by working in Emergency Medicine in the United Kingdom for one year, strengthening her clinical skills in a multicultural healthcare environment.

After relocating to Australia, Dr Subha worked for one year at Ipswich Hospital, QLD gaining experience across multiple specialties including General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, and General Surgery. This broad hospital experience has provided her with a comprehensive understanding of patient care across all stages of life.

Since commencing General Practice in February 2026, Dr Subha has been committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based, and patient-centred care. She enjoys building long-term relationships with her patients and believes in working collaboratively to achieve the best possible health outcomes.

Dr Akila is a dedicated General Practitioner with over 10 years of medical experience across Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom (NHS), and Australia. He is passionate about providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare and enjoys caring for patients of all ages.

His clinical interests include chronic disease management, cardiovascular health, diabetes care, women's health, men's health, immunisation, mental health, preventive medicine, and acute medical care.

Dr Akila is known for being a good listener who takes a holistic, patient-centred approach. He believes in building strong doctor–patient relationships, involving patients in shared decision-making, and providing thorough follow-up to achieve the best possible health outcomes.
